Ludwig Nikulski (Germany)

Ludwig Nikulski is a Berlin-based photographer, who was born in Greifswald at the Baltic Sea. He studied Fine Arts and Philosophy in Greifswald and Photography in Berlin where he graduated in 2018.

Growing up in a small town in Eastern Germany he is intrigued by the extreme. Whether it is the large scale of a metropolis or a vast and lonesome landscape. Ludwig travelled to Iceland to explore an inner state of isolation, where he shot his series Opal in August 2020. Opal is a conceptual and autobiographical reflection on isolation. The project starts with a prosaic and confusing text, which is based on personal experience. There is not a strict narrative in this photo story, demanding from the viewer a personal reflection and resonation.

Ludwig has received many awards and stipends such as Stipend by Künstlerhaus Lukas for the “Nes Artist Residency Skagaströn”, Iceland (2020); Nominated for Dokumentarförderpreis Wüstenrotstiftung (2020), German Photobook Award Bronze in the category student projects (2018) and Finalist for the Award for Emerging Artists Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (2018).
