Analogue Photo Walk and Darkroom Workshop with Rotlicht Festival Vienna

29. 8. at the Opening Week of Kranj Foto Fest 2026

Kranj Foto Fest is proud to welcome Rotlicht, a Festival for Analogue Photography from Vienna, a recognised photo festival reference in analogue photography, for a special photo walk and workshop during the opening week of Kranj Foto Fest 2026.

Guided by analogue photography experts Michael Laubsch and Dino Rekanović, participants will photograph the streets of Kranj using film cameras before returning to the darkroom to develop their own black-and-white film rolls, step by step, with guidance from the Rotlicht team. Open to everyone – from complete beginners to experienced photographers – the workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience the entire photographic process, from exposing the film to developing it by hand. Participants who do not own an analogue camera will be able to borrow one from Rotlicht, making the workshop accessible to all.

About analogue photography

In an age of instant images and infinite storage, analogue photography invites us to slow down. Every frame on a roll of film is a deliberate act: you compose, you expose, you move on, without knowing exactly what you have captured until the film is developed. There is no delete button, no review screen, no undo.

This deliberateness is the heart of the medium. Shooting on film sharpens your eye, deepens your patience and connects you to a century-long tradition of image-making. The grain, the tonal range, the slight unpredictability – these are not imperfections. They are the character of the photograph.

What we provide

Every participant will be equipped with an analogue camera provided by Rotlicht if needed, while a roll of Leica black-and-white film is kindly sponsored by Leica Austria.

No prior experience is required – our team will walk you through the basics before we set off.

Programme

1 Introduction & Camera Handout

A brief introduction to analogue camera operation and black-and-white film. Cameras are distributed and loaded. Questions welcome.

2 Photo Walk Through Kranj

A guided walk through the streets and architecture of Kranj. Shoot freely, experiment with light and shadow, and make every frame count. Your roll holds 36 exposures.

3 Developing Your Own Film

Back in the darkroom, participants develop their own rolls of film step by step, guided by the Rotlicht team. No prior experience necessary – this is hands-on learning at its best.
